PERMITTED EVERYWHERE?
Once
upon a time, not so long ago, in a land not so far away existed gardens, and
town squares and places people could play. Markets and Church yards covered the
land--ringed with town squares and local stores. In every city, throughout every
nation, there exists a space, constructed by the people, to gather. And what
happens when the peole gather? Ideas come to live--shared dreams and
visions-regenerative rants and reformative thoughts. The
"Commons" is an important function of a society represented by and for
the people because if the people can not gather together--they can not dream and
plan together.
When
did our towns become stripped of common spaces? When did our cities become gated
communities? When did our public spaces become places of surveillence? When did
this Become Illegal? When did it become illegal to dance in the streets of
Manhattan? When did it become unlawful to congregate at night in Downtown Los
Angeles? When did it become criminal to have a picnic on the grass in front of
almost any town hall in America.
Unfortunately,
a high majority of towns and cities in the United States have ripped apart their
public commons and have replaced them with highways, turnpikes, and malls.
In these places cars and trucks have become more important than Pedestrians.
And as the central cities grow larger and more expensive—workers, are
increasingly displaced to housing outside the city limits and industry
frequently shipped to other nations leaving the city centers devoid of activity
save a small portion of corporate commerce. Art is Permitted Everywhere believes
that these city streets and commons can be reclaimed by staging theatre and art
in these “dead” zones.

Art
is Permitted Everywhere
believes that in order to facilitate the reclamation of community, of the human
spirit, we must stop censoring ourselves and must work to take back and reclaim
our public commons through art. It is through art that the mind is allowed to be
free--to think, to explore, to ask, to imagine, to dream.
Art
is Permitted Everywhere
supports and sponors activities which hail the commons and the common
citizen--poetry readings in park spaces, cheap public sculptures, flower gardens
installed by neighbors, theatre in the square, street festivals.
Art is Permitted Everywhere does not like Malls. Malls have become inarticulated modulated fifedoms run by corporations which do not seek to engender or facilitate creativity but to facilitate commerce. segregated by zoned uses which leads to a segregation of Life activity and creativity: Commercial, Residential, Park, Industry, Ghetto, Wealthy, Dismal, Beutiful, Play, Work, Eat, Sleep.
